Background
Founded by Prince Harry, the Invictus Games use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for wounded, injured and ill servicemen and women and the families that play such an important supporting role. It is the only international adaptive sporting event for wounded, injured and ill active duty and veteran service members. Competitors take part in sports including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and indoor rowing.

The long term objective of the Games is to showcase the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and and generate a wider understanding and respect for those who serve their country. Named after Invictus, Latin for unconquered or undefeated the first Invictus Games took place in 2014 in London, UK. The second event was held in Orlando, Florida in 2016 and the third will be in Toronto in 2017.

Sydney 2018

On November 12, 2016 Prince Harry announced that Sydney will host the 2018 Games: “We had three key criteria. First, it had to be an iconic city – somewhere known the world over. Second, it needed to be a city with a proud military heritage, which would welcome competitors from all over the world with open arms. And finally, we wanted to go somewhere where they are absolutely sports mad and would really get behind our competitors. The 2018 Invictus Games are coming to Sydney!”

Australian International Military Games (AIMG) is a not-for-profit charity responsible for planning and delivering the Australian Invictus Games in 2018. The key details are as follows:
  • When: October 18-29, 2018, commencing with an Opening Ceremony and concluding with a Closing Ceremony
  • Where: Greater Sydney, including Sydney Olympic Park and around Sydney Harbour
  • Participants: AIMG anticipates 500+ competitors from at least 17 countries
  • Sports: The Games will include the following 11 adaptive sports; archery, athletics, golf, indoor rowing, power lifting, road cycling, sitting volleyball, swimming, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby and an iconic Australian demonstration sport such as sailing.

Key Responsibilities
The Marketing & Communications Director is a key position and reports into the Chief Commercial & Marketing Officer, AIMG. The role will be responsible for the development and implementation of the Marketing & Communications strategy, setting objectives and priorities in line with the overall objectives of AIMG for the Invictus Games Sydney, 2018. You will support the CCMO and Management team relating to communications, marketing and commercial areas. 
The role will have the following key responsibilities:
  • In conjunction with the CCMO, develop the marketing and communication strategy that effectively aligns with AIMG’s goals and business objectives
  • Responsible for/lead the implementation of this strategy
  • Act as the lead in all Marketing & Communications activities, including:
    • Internal and external communications
    • Public relations
    • Social media
    • Website
    • Events
    • Brand management
    • Licensing and Merchandise
    • Ambassadors
  • Together with the CCMO, manage the budget
  • Manage and activate marketing value-in-kind dedicated by Partners to promote the Games and the cause
  • Create a culture within the Communications and Marketing team/AIMG consistent with the IG2018 brand and core mission of transforming empowerment into belonging/embrace
  • Develop and implement PR and media strategies that successfully deliver information and key messages to the public and stakeholders
  • Oversee the implementation of the PR and social media strategies
  • Oversee event communications to identified IG2018 stakeholders
  • Manage the use of external resources as they pertain to the marketing and communications function, for example:
    • PR agencies, creative agencies, website and digital agencies
    • Manage and leverage the capabilities of these supplies and ensure these services are delivered effectively, efficiently and within budget
  • Lead communication and marketing updates to the Board and Management team, in conjunction with the CCMO
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, i.e. assist CCMO with commercial opportunities
  • Manage the Communications Manager/Practitioner and their KPI’s; manage any interns/volunteers
  • Key external contacts:
    • Games stakeholders and partners
    • Supplier and agencies
    • Relevant Government agencies, departments and ministries
    • Sponsors
    • Media

Skills & Experience Required

Essential:

  • 7+ years in Marketing and Communications, preferably in major events/competitions, or similar working environment.
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline (communications, marketing, PR or journalism)
  • Demonstrated experience in designing strategies and campaigns to achieve objectives
  • Existing relationships within media, including  journalists, PR agencies and other industry networks
  • Creative skills in writing and developing content for varied marketing and communication applications
  • Experience in communicating with a range of stakeholders face-to-face, via phone and online
  • Proven ability to create and drive new concepts to successful conclusion
Key attributes required:
  • A team player, who will make a visible and positive contribution to the organisation and help, support and guide the Games to sustainability and success 
  • A proven communicator, experienced in operating in complex multi-stakeholder environments with an ability to think through problems, innovate and achieve effective solutions
  • Track record of fostering relationships across different geographies, both internally and externally
  • Understanding of the Invictus Stakeholder environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Invictus Movement and cultural fit with AIMG
