Founded by Prince Harry, the Invictus Games use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for wounded, injured and ill servicemen and women and the families that play such an important supporting role. It is the only international adaptive sporting event for wounded, injured and ill active duty and veteran service members. Competitors take part in sports including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and indoor rowing.

The long term objective of the Games is to showcase the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for those who serve their country. Named after Invictus, Latin for unconquered or undefeated the first Invictus Games took place in 2014 in London, UK. The second event was held in Orlando, Florida in 2016 and the third will be in Toronto in 2017.

Sydney 2018

On November 12, 2016 Prince Harry announced that Sydney will host the 2018 Games: “We had three key criteria. First, it had to be an iconic city – somewhere known the world over. Second, it needed to be a city with a proud military heritage, which would welcome competitors from all over the world with open arms. And finally, we wanted to go somewhere where they are absolutely sports mad and would really get behind our competitors. The 2018 Invictus Games are coming to Sydney!”

Australian International Military Games (AIMG) is a not-for-profit charity responsible for planning and delivering the Australian Invictus Games in 2018. The key details are as follows:
  • When: October 18-29, 2018, commencing with an Opening Ceremony and concluding with a Closing Ceremony
  • Where: Greater Sydney, including Sydney Olympic Park and around Sydney Harbour
  • Participants: AIMG anticipates 500+ competitors from at least 17 countries
  • Sports: The Games will include the following 11 adaptive sports; archery, athletics, golf, indoor rowing, power lifting, road cycling, sitting volleyball, swimming, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby and an iconic Australian demonstration sport such as sailing.
The Commercial Director is a key position and reports into the Chief Commercial & Marketing Officer, AIMG. The role will lead the delivery of all Commercial activity for the Invictus Games Sydney 2018, including sponsorship, ticket sales, donations, philanthropy, merchandise and corporate hospitality.  

Key Responsibilities
  • Support to design and implement a commercial strategy to deliver over budget revenues
  • Support the identification and negotiation process for all major sponsorship/partnership deals and manage ongoing relationships as required
  • Lead the development of the ticketing strategy and oversee its implementation
  • Lead the development of the corporate hospitality program, and oversee its implementation
  • Support to design and implement a fundraising program that is integrated across our commercial partners and our communications program
  • Oversee and manage a merchandise program to maximise revenue opportunities
  • Support the identification of, and application to, philanthropic foundations
  • Build senior relationships with C-suite contacts in the corporate sector, working with members of AIMG Executive as appropriate
  • Represent AIMG at relevant events – including conferences, seminars and workshops, to assist in building the profile of the Invictus Games in the community
  • Achieve KPI’s and targets agreed with the Chief Commercial & Marketing Officer
  • Support the Chief Commercial and Marketing Officer on an ad hoc basis

Skills & Experience Required


  • Tertiary qualifications and significant experience in a senior commercial or sales management role
  • Demonstrated experience for developing and implementing activity to drive revenue across sponsorship, merchandise, ticketing and corporate hospitality
  • Well-developed communications skills (including interpersonal, negotiation, influencing and presentation)  with an ability to think through problems, and achieve effective solutions
  • A proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships both internally and externally with clients and a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Outstanding client service and delivery skills
  • Self-starter, with proven ability to work independently in accordance with the strategy and to achieve agreed goals and targets
  • Understanding of the Invictus Stakeholder environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Invictus Movement and cultural fit with AIMG
