The Role

The Account Manager (AM) is responsible for overseeing all the day-to-day activities and project management duties related to the planning and execution of Mastercard’s Rugby World Cup 2019 sponsorship. The AM will have a high level of interaction with clients and other stakeholders. The AM must be a strong project manager who is thoroughly organized and detail-oriented. The AM will work closely with their AD, but will be expected to work independently, make decisions, and take ownership to ensure successful management and fulfilment of key project outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Local day to day contact with RWCL counterpart at equal level
  • Support with development, approval, management and activation of all host country events such as the announcement of the partnership, roadshows, workshops and experiential activation
  • Oversee Mastercard program approvals with RWCL on RWC initiatives and ambassadors
  • Work in conjunction with global team to build marketing toolkits for local market in Japanese
  • Support host country player/ambassador appearances
  • Build and manage robust event management tools and support AD in the creation of a project plan
  • Support activation strategies throughout the year
  • Manage branding, including sourcing, approval, production and logistics
  • Help manage asset allocation program and tracking of assets for all regions
  • Manage vendors, partners to ensure proper coordination of program logistics
  • Leads relationship with third parties whilst reviewing, evaluating and negotiating basic contracts with vendors, properties, etc.
  • Oversees multiple project work-streams from development through execution
  • Drives project forward whilst managing client expectations at both the local and global level
  • Communicate project status, successes or issues to AD

Client (External / Internal Relations)

  • Serve as the key liaison between Mastercard Japan and the Global Sponsorships lead
  • Build relationship and manage requests from Mastercard Japan in relation to RWC2019
  • Primary duty is to cultivate relationships with current clients as primary contacts
  • Regular interface with clients at appropriate level and attendance at relevant meetings
  • Deliver complex client relation activities, including presentations
  • Daily client contact at multiple levels
  • Regularly reports status & issues to Snr Management (usually AD)

Strategic Planning

  • Has fundamental understanding of client objective and goals
  • Captures key insights and learnings
  • Plan execution, and participation in strategic planning
  • Supports senior staff in all planning for clients
  • Encouraged to recommend strategic ideas to senior staff

Budget Management

  • Responsible for research and development of budgets for senior review

Creative Development

  • Demonstrates ability to express independent thought
  • Expresses new ideas and concepts
  • Uses agency resources to ensure creative process

Staff Management / Leadership

  • Demonstrates leadership in assigning / following tasks and deadlines
  • Previous experience managing staff on project to project basis
  • Handles staff development, coaching and mentoring whilst resolving team issues
  • Ensures conclusions and actions are timely and accurate
  • Keeps the broader project team in the loop on key developments

Knowledge / Expertise

  • Moderate number of connections within industry, vendors, etc.
  • Developing understanding of industry fundamentals; also developing an area of expertise

Written / Verbal Communication

  • Conducts one-to-one communication with Client
  • Leads and influences conversations
  • Presents to small groups
  • Reviews and improves work of subordinates – POV’s memo’s competitive reports, etc.
  • Supports in the creation of client documents – work requires minimal revisions from supervisor

Qualifications & Skills

  • 3 – 6 years’ experience in a client or agency role with a background of managing top tier sponsorships – from rights managements, to the development, integration and implementation of associated consumer marketing strategy
  • A demonstrated ability to put new systems in place to ensure smooth running of the account
  • Exposure to Financial Services industry is an advantage
  • Must be proficient in both Japanese & English at the Business level (Verbal & Written)
