Assistant General Manager – Campden Hill Law Tennis Club

Campden Hill Lawn Tennis Club (the Club) located in the heart of Notting Hill offers some of the finest tennis facilities in London, with six indoor and six outdoor courts.  In addition, there is a fitness room, a lounge and TV area and a very popular restaurant and bar.

The Club is a thriving tennis haven with approximately 1600 members across all membership categories.  The membership is loyal, with many longstanding members and family groups, and the Club’s style is open, inclusive, informal and friendly. Membership is capped, and the Club is oversubscribed.

The Club is foremost a tennis club, with both social tennis and high performance tennis, and boasting four Men’s and four Ladies’ teams. The Club also participates in local and national competitions and has enjoyed significant success. There is a very active ladder, with approximately 150 participants, that runs on a six week cycle.  Social tennis in the form of Thursday Club Night and Saturday Club Afternoon are integral to Club life, encouraging members to mix socially and play across tennis levels. The Club offers only limited court bookings and the ethos is one of sharing courts at peak times. Organised social tennis and court policies help build the Club’s culture of friendliness and openness, breaking down some of the traditional stuffiness associated with private members clubs.  Tennis coaching, clinics and courses are available for both adults and juniors members across a range of tennis skill levels.

The Club’s membership is diverse – ranging from local families to corporate leaders and celebrities across a spectrum of tennis abilities and social involvement. With its restricted numbers, outstanding tennis facilities and neighbourhood feel, Club membership is a privilege.  The Club offers a number of membership categories, ranging from Midweek to Full and spanning from Juniors (8 years of age) to Veterans (72 years of age), and a fee structure that is attractive relative to other London clubs.

The social dimension of the Club is highly valued and integral to the enjoyment of members on and off court. The restaurant and bar are popular, offering high calibre catering to members and their guests and contributing to the Club’s positive social atmosphere.

The Role

Campden Hill LTC wish to appoint an Assistant General Manager who will be responsible for the smooth and efficient operation and management of the Club. This will therefore encompass tennis, social and catering activities, management and leadership of the team, financial management and the maintenance of the building and grounds.

The Club’s operations are managed by the General Manager for the benefit of members.  The AGM will be guided by the General Manager and will implement broader strategies set by the Committee.  The AGM, in the absence of the General Manager will be the main point of contact for members on Club matters and represents the Club to the external tennis community and other third parties.  The AGM must be able to communicate to different constituencies, address member concerns in an even-handed way and maintain a friendly but professional demeanour.

The AGM is expected to maintain some flexibility in work schedules (the Club is open seven days a week from 7 am to 11 pm), including working on weekends, in order to get to know a broad cross section of members, and accommodate Club events and management meetings as required

The Club is privileged with outstanding tennis facilities and a loyal membership.  It is a highly sought after Club, with a strong waiting list for new members. The AGM is expected to promote a friendly atmosphere for Club members whilst also meeting professional management objectives and seeking to improve the tennis and social experience.

Responsibilities

The Assistant General Manager will have full financial and operational responsibility for all aspects of the Club, in the absence of the General Manager. A highly visible role, the post holder will focus on the delivery of outstanding service levels and member experience, effective leadership and ensuring that the Club maintains it ethos as a thriving tennis and social hub.

Working in conjunction with the General Manager, the Assistant General Manager will:

  • Ensure that operational performance and delivery is to the highest standard, maximising cost efficiencies whilst providing the very best levels of member and guest experience.
  • Drive and maintain a friendly positive club culture focusing on tennis participation, member interaction and service.
  • Recruit, train and inspire all members of staff, defining and implementing training needs and undertaking regular performance reviews and appraisals.
  • Oversee the provision of the tennis programmes at all levels, including clinics, junior programmes and the administration of Open and Closed Tournaments.
  • Organise and attend Club social tennis events to encourage member participation and explore other opportunities for members to play and to improve the overall playing standard within the Club.
  • Assist the GM with all food and beverage services, ensuring a quality driven, varied and attractive menu for members whilst achieving target margins agreed with Committee.
  • Assist the General Manager to establish pricing policies and supervise purchasing and inventory management.
  • Assist in coordinating the delivery of catering to private member functions.
  • Ensure regular communication to all members regarding, events and Club news.
  • Assist in Exploring new technology to enhance member experience and operating efficiencies.
  • Ensure that the Club in good repair and decoration, inspecting all facilities on a weekly basis, documenting areas that need action and advising the Buildings Sub Committee on projects required.
  • Maintain the facilities, and in conjunction with the Committee, to ensure that the tennis and social opportunities for members are optimised.
  • Ensure that operational procedures and facility management comply with all health and safety regulations.
  • Manage cleaning contractors to ensure the facilities meet a high standard of cleanliness.
  • Assist the GM and Finance Sub Committee to prepare budgets.
  • Ensure optimal financial management at all times and accurate recording of all transactions.
  • Oversee member details and compliance with data protection and the payment of subscription and other fees.
  • Attend Sub Committee meetings where appropriate.
  • Duty Manager shifts – prepared to open and close the building and follow all the open and close procedures
  • Responsible for the smooth running and organisation of all tennis events at the club
  • Responsible for all tennis tournaments marketing and promotion

Qualifications & Skills

Through their previous experience the ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the required skills and competencies in order to meet the responsibilities and accountabilities described including:

  • Extensive operational management experience within a premium service and consumer facing, sport, leisure or hospitality led business.
  • Successful track record of managing a P&L whilst delivering operational excellence.
  • Evidence of inspirational leadership and leadership by example. Able to effectively lead and develop teams.
  • Extremely strong customer service ethos demonstrated by the delivery of operational strategies and processes to ensure consistency of service delivery.
  • An active interest in tennis, understanding of the game and broad approach to driving participation is desirable.
  • Strong financial acumen with the ability to maximise cost efficiencies and reduce operational leakage.
  • Previous experience of managing a food and beverage operation will be advantageous.
  • Socially confident and an excellent communicator – diplomatic, tactful and able to build productive relationships with the Chairman, Committee, members, and staff whilst maintaining a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to treat each individual member equally, irrespective of the member’s background, position, or level of tennis.
  • Discipline to maintain absolute discretion about members whilst working closely amongst them in such a small, friendly club (barring where required for professional reasons).
  • Natural proactive orientation and innovative approach to meeting member needs.
  • Visible and highly motivated – able to be flexible and willing to get involved in all aspects of the Club at critical times.
