Executive General Manager – Events

Position Profile and Primary Objectives
The Executive General Manager – Events is responsible for driving the growth and overseeing the management of Netball’s sport entertainment products – Suncorp Super Netball and International Events. With a focus on fan acquisition and engagement, broadcast and attendance growth for these Events will underpin the growth of the Netball economy.

Further to this, the Events Group deliver several participation and pathway based Events that support NA’s high performance and inclusion objectives.

With a strong focus on stakeholder management across the business, the EGM Events will contribute to ensuring the organisation achieves its business objectives faster, with less risk and at a lower cost or greater revenue by improving how the business systems operate and information is recognised, shared and acted upon.

Position Location
The position will be based at Netball Australia, 191 Johnston Street, Fitzroy.

Salary / Tenure / Hours
Executive remuneration – Full Time as per Contract of Employment – 38 hours per week with the requirement to work additional hours as required to meet organisational and operational requirements.

Key Output Areas:

Strategic Focus, Thought Leadership and Executive Management Strategic Focus

  • Drive the commercial growth of Netball’s Sport Entertainment Products.
  • Develop an annual Events (including SSN) Business Plan that is aligned to and delivers outcomes across the Australian Netball strategy.
  • Lead the development of short, medium and long term growth strategy for SSN and International Tests, including analysis of key markets.

Suncorp Super Netball

  • Ensure obligations of Leagues and Clubs are met under the terms of the
  • Team Participation Agreement and liaise with NA Compliance to implement penalties for non-compliance.
  • Liaison with NA Compliance and Business Services to ensure policies and procedures are in place to avoid issues that impact the integrity of the League (with a focus on corruption, doping, and code of conduct).
  • Manage policies and procedures of the SSN including drafting of competition policies, rules and regulations, and compliance guidelines (including breaches).
  • Coordinate NA and Club Event Operations, Commercial and Marketing in relation to playing conditions for the League that deliver an entertaining spectacle but respect the integrity of the competition.
  • Oversee the development of the Event Presentation guidelines to ensure that presentation and delivery of SSN match day is differentiated from other forms of netball and consistent with target demographic.
  • Member of the SSN Game Development Workgroup.
  • Lead the development of marketing, communication, and PR plans that drive awareness, interest, viewership, and attendance for SSN.

High Performance Leadership and Culture

  • Contribute to building and managing a high performing culture across the Organisation.
  • Provide operational leadership across the business, fostering team cohesion, providing support, advice and assistance to NA staff.

Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Manage key stakeholders including SSN Clubs and broadcasters to ensure alignment of objective and strategic direction.
  • Oversee senior stakeholder relationships with SSN Clubs at CEO/GM Level.
  • Develop and implement integration plans across NA Sport, Media and Business Services to leverage Event outcomes.
  • Build effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders in order to deliver successful outcomes for Netball Australia consistent with the stated short, medium and long-term priorities.

Grow the Netball Economy

  • Work with the CCO to drive the SSN Commercial program including sponsorship, LED signage, licensing and hospitality.
  • Oversee the creation and development of opportunities for attracting investment and funding from external stakeholders.
  • Ongoing review of the SSN commercial models and implement changes to drive growth in Leagues and Clubs revenues.
  • Manage relationship with Head of Sport, Sales, Programming and Promotions at Channel Nine to develop initiatives that grow the commercial value of the broadcast via increased ratings and saleable in broadcast assets.
  • Support NA Media Rights negotiations as part of the broader media rights strategy.
  • Identify and implement strategic partnerships that reinforce SSN as the leading female entertainment sport.

Finance and Risk Management

  • Develop and manage annual NA Events Group budget process.
  • Review financial performance of SSN and International Tests and recommend appropriate funding arrangements related to strategic objectives.
  • Monitor and report annual SSN benchmarking performance and make recommendations to drive growth.
  • Commit to ensuring that all risks associated with our business are routinely and systematically addressed to reduce potential losses and maximise potential opportunities.

Corporate Governance

  • Ensure adherence to the policies, procedures, plans and manuals for the conduct of Netball Australia Events.
  • Oversee annual review of the SSN Manuals – commercial, operations, and compliance.
  • Provide advice relating to the procurement and management of Netball Australia’s Events to the CEO and Executive Team as required.

Occupational Health & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations and perform all duties in a manner that ensures the health and safety of self and others in the workplace.
  • Comply with Netball Australia policies, procedures and ensure safe working practices.
  • Consult with employees on OH&S matters, monitor OH&S performance and investigate incidents within area of responsibility.

Judgement & Decision Making

  • This position has a high level of autonomy in decision making and a high level of judgment is required.
  • Ability to make complex decisions within legislation, regulations, organisational strategies and corporate policies and procedures.
  • This position is responsible for making key strategic recommendations to the Board, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Management Team.
  • Ability to make complex decisions related to High Performance.

Specialist Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong and demonstrated ability to manage the planning, co-ordination, delivery and evaluation of events.
  • Strong capacity to lead the strategic vision and creative programming of events, coupled with an understanding of the long term goals of the wider organisation.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the principles and practices of managing large budgets, including the ability to attract sponsorships and grants from public and private sector organisations.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing, maintaining and growing strategic alliances with key public and private sector organisations.
  • Experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of events and related promotions and marketing strategies, and the ability to provide a high level of creative thinking.
  • An ability to quickly develop an understanding of a range of issues and provide authoritative advice.
  • Ability to work within, and lead the development of, high performing teams.

Interpersonal Skills

  • High level of interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage and negotiate with clients, government departments, agencies, and staff.
  • Ability to lead and work effectively with and influence teams, and resolve complex problems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to prepare external correspondence and reports, and to positively engage with key stakeholders, members of the public and other employees.
  • Ability to uphold and demonstrate Netball Australia’s Values of Respect, Teamwork, Agility and Excellence.

  • Proven ability to motivate, develop and manage professional staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise work objectives to achieve corporate goals within available resources and competing timeframes.
  • Capability to develop strategies, policies and high level reports with clear recommendations.
  • Ability to prepare budgets and monitor financial performance.

Knowledge / experience

  • Minimum fifteen (15) years’ experience in a related field of employment.
  • Demonstrated experience in high performance program management.
  • Experience in budget interpretation and understanding, program/project/line and contract management, working with Government agencies/authorities, policies and funding programs.


  • Relevant tertiary qualification.
  • Professional membership of a relevant body would be an advantage.
  • Current Australian driver’s licence.
  • Current Working With Children Check.

Key Selection Criteria:

  • A tertiary qualification in event management or related discipline and/or broad experiences in business management and leadership.
  • Minimum fifteen (15) years’ experience in a related field of employment.

  • Masters qualification.
  • Significant Director or Executive Management experience in a medium-sized organisation.
  • Professional membership of a relevant body would be an advantage.
  • Experience in Board meeting procedures.
