Executive General Manager – Media

Position Profile and Primary Objectives
The Executive General Manager Media is primarily responsible for driving Netball’s digital innovation and strategic communication agenda.

With a strong focus on stakeholder management across the business, the EGM Media will contribute to ensuring the organisation achieves its business objectives faster, with less risk and at a lower cost or greater revenue by improving how the business systems operate and information is recognised, shared and acted upon.

Position Location
The position will be based at Netball Australia, 191 Johnston Street, Fitzroy.

Salary / Tenure / Hours
Executive remuneration – Full Time as per Contract of Employment – 38 hours per week with the requirement to work additional hours as required to meet organisational and operational requirements.

Key Output Areas

Strategic Focus, Thought Leadership and Executive Management

Strategic Focus – Digital Transformation; Growth and Greater Engagement across Netball’s Digital Channels; Strategic Communications

Support the Chief Executive to develop and successfully implement of the Netball Strategic Plan, with a focus on media and communications.

Working with the Product and Media teams and where relevant external agencies, lead the translation of strategy and corporate objectives, into the annual Media Group plans and budgets (which support a broader Marketing strategy), including the development of:

  • Digital and Social strategies for NA products & events;
  • Creative campaigns for NA products & events;
  • Content that reflects NA’s brand positioning;
  • Proactive publicity strategies for NA products & events;
  • Strategic Comms and positioning for Netball.

Ensure Netball’s digital strategy is ‘customer’ lead and takes advantage of new technologies and opportunities as they come into the market.

Represent the organisation in meetings/forums/working parties with government departments, project/program agencies as required.

Make decisions within the delegations provided by the Chief Executive.

  • Provide strong leadership, direction and effective staff management of the Media group to ensure continuous improvement and excelling performance.

Communication and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Promote and lead a “stakeholder focused” culture.
  • Communicate well, maintain good business relationships and represent Netball Australia in a positive light.
  • Support Netball Australia and its Member Organisations to flourish amidst the rapidly changing landscape of sport in Australia.
  • Focus on working optimally in a ‘federated’ organisational model and driving a strong netball culture.
  • Lead engagement with influencers and ensure effective partner and stakeholder management.
  • Provide leadership and establish partnerships both within netball in Australia and internationally and with other sport sector stakeholders.

Growing the Netball Economy

  • Oversee the creation and seeding of the “Netball Story” through all forms of owned and earned media.
  • Grow the size and engagement within Netball’s digital and social channel.

Financial and Risk Management

  • The ability to prepare budgets, monitor and interpret financial performance.
  • Lead the delivery of performance targets, contracts and procurements to maximise financial and operational performance and reduce risk.
  • Commitment to ensuring that all risks associated with our business are routinely and systematically addressed to reduce potential losses and maximise potential opportunities.

All employees will:

  • Minimize damage or loss of property within the incumbents control.

Corporate Governance

  • Lead the development and implementation of strategies and policies within the Media Group.
  • Ensure that all media and communications adhere with national standards and Netball Australia’s strategic direction.

Occupational Health and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations and ensure the health and safety of yourself and others.
  • Comply with Netball Australia policies, procedures and ensure safe working practices.
  • Consult with employees on OH&S matters, monitor OH&S performance and investigate incidents within area of responsibility.

Judgement & Decision Making

  • This position has a high level of autonomy in decision making and a high level of judgment is required.
  • Ability to make complex decisions within legislation, regulations, organisational strategies and corporate policies and procedures.
  • This position is responsible for making key strategic recommendations to the Board, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Management Team.
  • Ability to make complex decisions related to High Performance.

Specialist Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong and demonstrated ability to relate and communicate with potential customers.
  • Strong capacity to lead the strategic vision and creative programming of all forms of media and communications.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the principles and practices of managing large budgets, including the ability to attract sponsorships and grants from public and private sector organisations.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing, maintaining and growing strategic alliances with key public and private sector organisations.
  • An ability to quickly develop an understanding of a range of issues and provide authoritative advice.
  • Knowledge of social media strategies to bring audiences with the potential to build actual relationships.
  • Ability to work within, and lead the development of, high performing teams.

Interpersonal Skills

  • High level of interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage and negotiate with clients, government departments, agencies, and staff.
  • Ability to lead and work effectively with and influence teams, and resolve complex problems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to prepare external correspondence and reports, and to positively engage with key stakeholders, members of the public and other employees.
  • Ability to uphold and demonstrate Netball Australia’s Values of Respect, Teamwork, Agility and Excellence.

Management Skills

  • Proven ability to motivate, develop and manage professional staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise work objectives to achieve corporate goals within available resources and competing timeframes.
  • Capability to develop strategies, policies and high level reports with clear recommendations.
  • Ability to prepare budgets and monitor financial performance

Knowledge / experience

  • Minimum fifteen years’ experience in a related field of employment.
  • Experience in budget interpretation and understanding, program/project/line and contract management, working with agencies/authorities, policies and funding programs.

Qualifications

  • Relevant tertiary qualification.
  • Professional membership of a relevant body would be an advantage.
  • Current Australian driver’s licence.
  • Current Working With Children Check.

Key Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • Demonstrated alignment with NA Values.
  • A tertiary qualification in media and communications or related discipline and/or broad experiences in business management and leadership.
  • Minimum fifteen years’ experience in a related field of employment.
  • Financial management: Ability to manage complex budgets to a high standard.
  • Strong strategic capabilities and the ability to set the strategic direction with the Board while achieving the identified outcomes.
  • Excellent leadership qualities including the ability to set clear direction; motivate others and solve conflicts.
  • An ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with a diverse and complex range of stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of the Australian media and media promotions and experience working with the media.
  • Experience in partner/sponsor/stakeholder liaison with strong interpersonal skills with a capacity for conflict resolution, relationship management and diplomacy.
  • Experience in developing and implementing media plans and strategies to achieve specific aims and objectives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and experience in writing media releases, articles and externally focused communications for a range of audiences.
  • Strong time management skills with proven ability to manage several projects at once, to prioritise work and to work under pressure to meet tight timeframes.
  • Computer literate with demonstrated ability in generic computer packages such as Microsoft Office and some familiarity with the internet, databases and social networking platforms.
  • Innovative and confident approach to meeting changing business challenges.
  • High level communication skills interpersonal skills and ability to elicit cooperation of people.
  • Ability to set priorities, plan work programs, meet deadlines and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to develop relationships across all levels of management.
  • Highly computer literate.

Desirable:

  • Masters qualification.
  • Significant Director or Executive Management experience in a medium-sized organisation.
  • Policy and strategy develop experience at national level.
  • Professional membership of a relevant body would be an advantage.
  • Experience in Board meeting procedures.
