First Team Commercial Manager

First Team Commercial Manager – Chelsea FC

Our client, Chelsea Football Club, are searching for a First Team Commercial Manager who can offer effective management and delivery of their 1st Team Squad, 1st Team Head Coach, Chelsea Ladies and Ambassadors for commercial activities, Club events and personal endorsement agreements.

Responsibilities

Main Responsibilities:

  • Development and implementation of a clear strategy for the management of 1st Team players, 1st Team Head Coach, Chelsea Ladies or Club Ambassadors for commercial use to maximise the time available and ensure a reasonable apportionment of usage across the group of individuals (to be agreed with the commercial team, communications team and football department)
  • Management and delivery of first team players (including the 1st Team Head Coach, Chelsea Ladies and Club Ambassadors on occasion) for contracted Club Partner appearances and other events from time to time (such as meet & greets, filming/photo shoots amongst others) supported by the Club’s partnership team
  • Working effectively with the Club’s partnership team to understand Partner requirements and objectives regarding player usage and identify suitable opportunities with players
  • Management and delivery of first team players (including the 1st Team Head Coach, Chelsea Ladies and Club Ambassadors on occasion) for Club activity (such as signing sessions, official Club events and filming/photo shoots amongst others) supported where required by internal departments including Marketing, Merchandise and Hospitality amongst other
  • Organisation of monthly open training sessions at the Club’s training ground to accommodate Partners and all departments across the business. The scheduling of such sessions to be agreed in advance with 1st Team Head Coach and communicated in a timely manner to all relevant departments
  • Management and delivery of players for personal endorsement agreements to maximise contractual obligations
  • Consideration at all times of the Club’s and players’ image to ensure that no activity is undertaken that may damage the reputation of either
  • Support to all relevant departments with regards to organisation of Partner and Club events at Cobham that involve players
  • Clear and regular communication of monthly player activity schedule to key members of the football department at Cobham (including the 1st Team Head Coach, 1st Team Medical Director and Head of Football Operations & Welfare amongst others) to ensure player usage is approved and has no impact on football activities
  • Clear and regular communication of player activity schedule to the Club’s senior management
  • Management of yearly player activity schedule including regular reporting into the Club’s commercial and communications teams to avoid clashes
  • Clear and timely reporting back into Club’s commercial team and other relevant departments with regards to player unavailability and suggestion of alternatives, bearing in mind player requirements and the objectives of the activity
  • Lead the management of the player activity database to ensure that Club’s finance and legal teams are kept up to date with reporting of any player commercial activity, either for the Club or in an individual capacity
  • Work with player representatives to understand player commercial requirements outside of Club duties and coordinate to avoid clashes with scheduling of Club/Partner commitments
  • Work with Club’s legal team and the sponsorship sales team to introduce Image Rights procedures to players’ commercial representatives at early stage
  • Identification of potential personal endorsement opportunities through regular liaison with the Club’s sponsorship sales team and the players’ commercial representatives
  • Identification of best practises within other football clubs and wider sports organisations to ensure management of player appearances is as effective as possible
  • Consideration at all times of the Club’s and players’ image to ensure that no activity is undertaken that may damage the reputation of either

Measures of Performance

  • Develops and nurtures a healthy, professional and proactive relationship with all players, football management staff, Club Ambassadors, all internal departments and external clients (including player representatives)
  • Ensure that players, football management staff, the Club’s commercial team and the Club’s communications team are kept informed of pending requirements in good time and with a high level of detail
  • Maintains a regular and updated log of all player activity providing all information required by internal departments, including commercial, legal and finance
  • Ensures an even and reasonable spread of activities throughout the 1st Team squad across a season
  • Ensures all activity is run to a pre-agreed format and to the highest possible standard
  • Ensures world class client servicing to all internal departments and external clients
  • Informs the commercial team or other departments of any potential issues that could affect player activity along with suggested solutions

Qualifications & Skills

  • Recognised expertise and experience in managing talent (preferably in sport but will consider candidates that have relevant experience within entertainment, music, fashion)
  • English speaker and fluent in minimum of one other European language (preferably French, Spanish, Portuguese or Italian)
  • Calm and professional individual who works well under pressure
  • Excellent communication and influencing capability
  • A commercially-driven individual who can demonstrate a good knowledge of sports sponsorship
  • Diligent and detail orientated
  • Willing to work between locations and to be flexible with working hours (including working weekends possible international travel)
  • A proven team player
